The red junglefowl, also known as the Indian red junglefowl, is a tropical pheasant-family bird found across much of Southeast Asia and parts of South Asia. Whole-genome studies show the domestic chicken was first domesticated from it about 8,000 years ago, with lesser contributions from the grey, Sri Lankan and green junglefowl. The wild form is sometimes kept in parks and gardens as a pest controller (Wikipedia, general species account).

Linnaeus described it in 1758, and five subspecies are recognised (Wikipedia, general species account).
