Kinabalu White-toothed Shrew

Pangolins, Treeshrews, Shrews & Gymnures

Crocidura baluensis

Basic stats

Habitat

Montane forest above about 1,500m

Range

Endemic to Mount Kinabalu and Mount Tambuyukon, Borneo

The Kinabalu shrew is endemic to Mount Kinabalu on Borneo and its sister peak, Mount Tambuyukon. Despite resembling the mountain shrew of Sumatra in external form, genetic work shows it diverged recently from the Sabah lineage of the Bornean shrew, which inhabits the lower slopes of Kinabalu up to about 1,500 m, where it is replaced by this species (Wikipedia, general species account).

Its larger size and longer hair, compared with the lowland Bornean shrew, appear to be adaptations to the colder mountain conditions (Wikipedia, general species account).
