The tricoloured munia is a finch native to Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and southern China, and introduced to the Caribbean, including Trinidad, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Venezuela. Like the chestnut munia it has been called the black-headed munia. Immatures have pale brown upperparts, lack the dark head of adults and have uniform buff underparts. Adults have brown irises, pale bluish-grey bills and grey legs (Wikipedia, general species account).

The species name malacca is a geographical misnomer, since it does not occur on the Malay Peninsula. It has no subspecies (Wikipedia, general species account).
