Lepidochelys olivacea
Habitat
Warm and tropical waters
Range
Mainly the Pacific and Indian Oceans; also the warm Atlantic
The olive ridley is the second-smallest and most abundant of the world's sea turtles. It lives in warm and tropical waters, mainly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans but also in the warm Atlantic. It and the related Kemp's ridley are best known for synchronised mass nestings called arribadas, in which thousands of females come to the same beach to lay eggs (Wikipedia, general species account).
The generic name Lepidochelys comes from Greek words for scale and turtle, perhaps a reference to the extra costal scutes characteristic of the genus (Wikipedia, general species account).
