Jerdon's baza is a moderate-sized brown hawk with a thin, white-tipped black crest usually held erect. It is 41 to 48 cm long with a wingspan of about 117 cm and weighs about 350 g. In flight it can be confused with the crested goshawk or changeable hawk-eagle but has a longer upright crest, very broad paddle-shaped wings and mostly plain pale underparts, with a white chin and a bold black central stripe. The name commemorates the surgeon-naturalist Thomas C. Jerdon (Wikipedia, species account).
It is typically seen in pairs making aerial sallies, and occasionally in family parties of three to five near forest edges (Wikipedia, species account).
