The Eurasian curlew is a very large wader, the largest wading bird in its range at 50–60 cm long, and among the most widespread of the curlews, breeding across temperate Europe and Asia. Its English name imitates its call, and the species name refers to the bow-shaped bill. Three subspecies are recognised, breeding respectively in west, north and central Europe, in west and central Siberia to north-east China, and from western Kazakhstan to south-western Siberia (Wikipedia, general species account).
