Native to Asia; introduced widely
The common myna, or Indian myna, is a starling native to Asia, an omnivorous bird of open woodland with a strong territorial instinct that has adapted extremely well to urban environments. Its range has expanded rapidly through introductions, and it has become a serious pest in places such as Australia; it is listed among the 100 worst invasive species (Wikipedia, general species account).
It was described from a specimen wrongly thought to be from the Philippines, and the type location was later corrected to Pondicherry in southern India. The species name is Latin for sad or gloomy (Wikipedia, general species account).
