The black-eared shrike-babbler is a bird of the vireo family (Vireonidae), traditionally considered an aberrant Old World babbler and formerly placed in the Timaliidae. It was long noted that its habits resembled those of vireos, though this was previously ascribed to convergent evolution. It is found in Southeast Asia from the Himalaya to western Malaysia, in subtropical or tropical moist montane forest (Wikipedia, general species account).
